Chapter One - Junk Mail

Each year American households receive an average of 848 pieces of junk mail.

In 2005, the United States Postal Services processed more junk mail than First Class Mail for the first time. When was the last time you received a PERSONAL HAND-WRITTEN card or note in the mail?

Conversely, when was the last time you have received a

piece of junk mail, or two, or three?

The information in this chapter is not theory, I have followed these steps at our home office.

When we started to actively be removed from direct mail lists, we were receiving over 200 pieces of unsolicited mail a month.

Now we are down to 20 pieces of unsolicited mail a month, proving that this does work. Some days, we get no mail from the postal carrier.

It is a sign of the times, that to maintain or obtain our privacy, we have to go to such lengths to get off lists. There are several areas to attack to reduce your fear of the postal carrier.

Junk mail has six levels.

Level 1—Unsolicited Mail. These are National Direct Advertising Mailings. You don’t know who they are from, don’t care and don’t want whatever they’re selling.

Level 2—Pre-Approved Credit Card Applications. These so called

pre-approved credit cards and how to stop getting them in your mail box.

Level 3—Catalogs. Mail from companies you no longer like or now shop from online, or from companies that have rented your name from other companies.

Level 4—Political Mailings. How about those annoying political mailings? We’ll show you how to slow the influx of hot air into your mail box.

Level 5—Nonprofit and Charity Mailings. Mail from nonprofit and charity mailings fall between the annoying political mailings and business mailings. Many of us like to donate to charities until they start to overwhelm us and then we just can’t seem to get off their lists.

Level 6—Established Business Relationship Mail. And finally for those businesses that you want to do business with, here’s methods to reduce the paper they send you. This includes magazine mailing lists.

We’ll also show you how to continue to receive those mailings and papers that you still want coming in and how to report companies/offenders when they have crossed the line.

You may have heard the phrase “it takes money to make money”. I like to rephrase that to “It Takes Time To Make Time”.

It’s true, it does take some time to rid yourself of junk correspondence. But it also takes time to deal with the influx. Your question becomes, how much time and effort do you want to spend on these activities?

The advantageous part of dealing with junk correspondence is that once you get off the lists, you don’t have to deal with it again and you have time to do other activities in your life.
